Seasonal Services & Transition Needs
-
Just like gardens, our approach leaves nothing to chance. Each season brings unique tasks:
Spring prep: Debris removal, pruning, soil testing, fertilization, bed edging, mulching, planting annuals and perennials. Optional Lawn aeration and overseeding,
Summer care: Intensive mowing, weeding, pest inspection, deadheading, and ongoing pruning.
Fall transition: heavy cleanup, final trims, top-dressing compost, bulb planting, and mulching for winter insulation.
Winter watch: Structural pruning of ornamental trees, hedge restoration, winter storm clean up
We work with nature’s calendar—and yours—to provide just what your yard needs, when it needs it most!
Hedge & Shrub Trimming
-
The optimal trim schedule depends on hedge type:
Non-flowering/evergreen hedges: Trim every 4–8 weeks during active growth (spring-fall).
Spring-flowering hedges: Prune right after blooms fade, so next year’s buds aren’t lost.
Summer-flowering hedges: Prune before spring growth (late winter/early spring).
Light touch-ups: Do as needed to maintain shape or after storm damage.
Avoid severe trimming during hot/dry spells or right before winter. For all hedges, always trim so the base is wider than the top to let sunlight reach the lower branches and keep full, healthy growth.
-
We shear-ly love tidy hedges! We start by hand, thinning excess interior growth to improve air and light, then use powered shears for shape. Here’s how we avoid common hedge-aches:
Don’t cut back more than 1/3 of the plant at a time.
Remove dead, diseased, or damaged wood first.
Use sharp, clean tools (to prevent ragged edges and disease).
Set up taut guide strings for straight lines on formal hedges.
Wear full protective gear: eye/ear/hand/foot protection.
Inspect work as we go for evenness and step back regularly—sometimes you need to get the big picture!
Questions on a particular hedge species? Our crew can identify plants and tailor care to their needs.
Ornamental Tree Care
-
Ornamental trees need care that leaves nothing to chance!
Standard services include:
Pruning to remove dead/damaged wood
Light shaping to maintain form and size
Thinning for air and light penetration (reduces disease)
Removal of suckers/watersprouts
Deadheading of spent blooms (for flowering trees)
Pruning is best done every 1–2 years for most ornamentals, though timing depends on bloom cycle. Trees blooming on old wood should be pruned right after flowering; those blooming on new wood are best pruned in late winter/early spring. Don’t prune more than 25% of live growth at a time—over-pruning can stress or distort your tree’s signature look.
-
Plant or transplant in early spring or fall, while trees are dormant and soil is workable. Roots establish best when soil stays moist and cool after planting, with minimal heat stress during summer.
Mulch & Compost Services
-
Healthy soil leads to healthy plants!
We deliver high-grade compost for top-dressing lawns, garden beds, shrubs, and trees, boosting soil structure, nutrient content, and beneficial microbes. Compost top-dressing involves adding a 2–3” layer over beds to fight compaction and improve fertility—a mulch-ificent service!
-
Mulch is a root solution for weed control, moisture retention, soil temperature management, and boosting soil health as it breaks down. It also creates a polished, tidy look in beds and under trees and shrubs.
Organic mulches add nutrients to the soil as they decompose.
Inorganic mulches (gravel, rubber) are long-lasting but do not enrich the soil and can overheat plants in extreme sunlight.
Our staff will guide you to the best mulch for your landscape and let your plants’ voices be heard: “Thank you so mulch!”
-
For most gardens, 2–3 inches of organic mulch is ideal (up to 4 inches for coarse chips). Over-mulching can suffocate plants; too little won’t suppress weeds or conserve water.
Formula:
Area (sq ft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 324 = Cubic yards needed
E.g., 200 sq ft × 3” = 600 ÷ 324 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards.Our crew will calculate the perfect amount, deliver, and install it root-to-tip for you.
-
Fine Screened Compost and other Organic mulches should be replenished annually to maintain coverage, color, and performance. Some types fade or compact faster than others—regular top-ups keep things fresh and fabulous, just like a spring bouquet.
Lawn Care Frequency & Best Practices
-
Keep grass slightly taller in summer—this shades roots and helps the soil hold moisture.
Vary mowing patterns to prevent soil compaction and encourage even growth.
Keep mower blades sharp—clean cuts mean healthier grass, while dull blades leave ragged tips that invite browning and disease.
-
While we usually collect all grass clippings, grass clippings, when small, are nature’s fertilizer. Leaving them helps return nutrients to the soil and reduce fertilizer needs by up to 25%. If clippings are heavy or clumpy (after rapid growth or rain), bag them or use a mulching mower.
-
The best times of day to mow are early morning (once dew dries) or late afternoon/evening—avoid mowing at midday heat. Never mow when grass is wet, since this leads to uneven cuts and disease risk.
-
Most lawns thrive with one inch of water per week, applied in 2–3 deep sessions rather than daily sprinkles. Morning watering is best to reduce evaporation and disease. Adjust for rainfall and always follow local watering restrictions.
Property Cleanups & Debris Removal
-
Our gourd-geous cleanups are thorough and timely!
Property cleanups typically cover:
Leaves, pine scape, twigs, sticks, and other debris removal from lawn, beds, walkways, and hardscapes
Mowing, edging, and trimming grass and borders
Light pruning of perennials, shrubs, and small trees
Clearing of spent annuals and prepping beds for new plantings
Weed removal in beds, paths, and cracks
Hauling and environmentally responsible disposal of green waste
Cleaning patios, driveways, and other hard surfaces
Spring cleanups help plants bloom-where-they’re-planted; fall cleanups prepare your yard for cozy winter rest.
-
For most landscapes, twice yearly (spring and fall) is ideal. Additional cleanups may be needed after storms, before special events, or whenever Jack Frost or Mother Nature have left too much behind!
Regular service keeps your property looking spruced up and prevents pest, drainage, or lawn health issues.
